Divorce and Remarriage in Church.
The Church of England was founded by Henry the Eighth who wanted to be able to divorce his wife but the Pope would not allow it. For a Church with that foundation to not allow the remarriage of divorcees in Church is to some hypocritical. Others disagree and point to the Biblical teaching of Jesus and the normative (but not sole) pattern of marriage as being of one man and one woman, and to be a lifelong commitment, as the proper place for the expression of human sexuality.
Before you can be married again you must have your decree absolute to show the vicar or he cannot consider your application to be married and you will be very disappointed.
You have to be able to show evidence that you wish to grow in the Christian faith. Please complete the form for divorcees on the info and forms page and bring it with you. (Not a wedding application form)
Many people both within the Church and outside the Church regard this as simplistic, or ‘outdated’. In the Went Valley we will sometimes marry those who are previously married, and who have a former spouse still alive. We do not expect to discuss this with your former spouse, and so we rely on you to answer the questions that we ask you. Forgiveness and a new beginning are at the heart of the Christian faith and our marriage policy - which is that of the Church of England - is that you may be remarried at the vicar’s discretion, in exceptional circumstances. We positively welcome those who wish to marry again after having gone through the pain of divorce. If we believe in a God of forgiveness and second chances: a God who brings light out of darkness ,we, as a church, have to act in a way that shows our communities in a concrete form that belief in action. Re-marrying those who have been divorced is one way of doing that.
What is Christian Marriage?
If you have been married before, or in a civil partnership it may or may not be possible to be married here depending on the reasons for the breakdown of your previous relationship. Please see the additional form that needs to be completed here and book an appointment to talk with the vicar about it first, on 01977 704744. We would like to be able to get you married in Church so that your dreams come true. Church is the place to get married. Please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your plans. Begin your married life with an act of Christian Worship during which you make your commitment to each other and ask for God’s blessing on your relationship. Christians believe that marriage is a gift from God. In the marriage ceremony, you make a public declaration of lifelong exclusive commitment to love each other. In marriage we try to follow his model by loving our partner in a self-sacrificial way, putting their needs before our own.
